Discover essential steps to take if you suspect a gas leak. Learn how to identify, respond to, and safely handle gas leak emergencies to protect your home and loved ones.

What to Do in Case of a Gas Leak

A potential gas leak is a serious matter that must be addressed immediately. While natural gas is odourless, a strong smell—similar to rotten eggs—is added to alert you if gas has leaked from its source. If you smell gas or hear it leaking on your property, here’s what you need to do.

If You Smell Gas Inside Your Home or Property

1. Turn Off the Gas Source

  • If the leak is from a gas appliance (e.g., a stove), turn off the shut-off valve located on the pipe connected to the appliance.
  • If that doesn’t work, shut off the main gas meter outside your house or the valve on your LPG cylinder.
  • 2. Extinguish Open Flames

  • Turn off all burning flames and pilot lights. Avoid unplugging or replugging any electrical devices, as this could generate a spark and ignite the gas.
  • 3. Avoid Ignition Sources

  • Do not light matches, smoke, or use lighters.
  • Avoid turning on lights, using flashlights, or operating phones inside the property.
  • 4. Ventilate the Area

  • Open windows and doors to allow the gas to disperse.
  • 5. Evacuate the Premises

  • Ensure everyone leaves the house and stays at a safe distance from the leak.
  • 6. Call a Professional

  • Contact your local plumber or gas service provider immediately. Avoid attempting to locate the source of the leak yourself.
  • If the Smell of Gas Is Outside Your Property

    1. Shut Off the Main Gas Supply

  • If safe, turn off the main gas meter by rotating the valve to a horizontal position. If using LPG tanks, turn the round valve on top of the tank clockwise.
  • 2. Avoid Ignition Sources

  • Do not smoke, light matches, or use electronic devices (including mobile phones) near the area where you smell gas.
  • 3. Contact a Professional
